If you get it, let me know on the van. I might consider gifting it to a niece that has a new baby and no money. We will see,

literally the only  models the DPS6 was used in on this continent were the Fiesta and Focus.  In the rest of the world, it’s used in a lot more models (e.g. Mondeo, Kuga, C-Max, etc.) but IIRC it’s a wet clutch version.

Good to know. Does the wet clutch alleviate some of the issues?

I find them quite enjoyable to drive. They lack all the gizmos ( which I hate anyway ) but their seating is comfortable, they ride decent, and they handle like a vehicle 1/2 their size.

My only real complaint is the lack of a V6 option.

Good luck finding one anywhere near here for $14.5k.

Around here 2014s with 100k+ bring $15k.

$16.5k for a 2017 with under 100k is a steal.

Eh, we could put down around $10k without hurting us, so it’d be about $130 /month on a 4 yr loan. Or we could just take our “extra” money and buy it outright on the spot, but I don’t care to use our buffer money.

Besides, I have a few of these laying around:

Ok, so all joking aside, they had one of these at the Carmax when I was bopping about, and we took it for a little spin. I’ve read a lot of reviews that had negative things to say about the Transit, but honestly, the only bad thing I could come up with was the seating arrangement wasn’t idea. This one had the full bench in the middle, which maybe they all do? I don’t know, and it was difficult to get into the third row. The driving position, once the seat was adjusted in one of about 100 ways, was really nice. It really drove well, felt great, and OMFG the headroom....

I would recommend.

We’ve driven quite a few. I find them very enjoyable to drive, tight/responsive unlike most modern minivan.

I liked the seating layout ( some are only 6 passenger with captains chairs in the middle ) and didn’t find the 3rd row hard to get into, simply fold down the passenger seat and walk in the back, easier than a minivan with captains chairs IMO.

My only real worry is the lack of V6. The 4 cyl feels adequate for normal use, returns good fuel economy, and seems to have plenty of go 0-70, I just like having extra power when needed. I think I’d have already pulled the trigger on one if they had a V6, the 4 cyl is just always tugging at the back of my mind. I know it will only get worse as I start adding things later on like a small lift and ATs.

I’m guessing the seat issue gets better with practice.

I felt like power is fine, and unlikely to ever be an issue.  But then again, the Montero eventually gets to 65.  At some point.

Kinja'd!!!1

Ya, IDK, we found it easy to use. Even my 75 yo grandpa had no issue getting in the 3rd row?

I mean it’s quicker than my 92, but it significantly slower than my van with the 3.8L that I’m used to. It would likely never be an issue, as you said, and I’m finding I tend to drive my 92 way more civilly, so it would probably be the same case with one of these.

Probably a bit biased, but that’s a great lookin model. Long wheel base, barn rear doors, doesn’t have the ecoboost unfortunately, but that 2.5 duratec will run forever. 16,500 is a decent price for the mileage . I wouldn’t worry too much about the 4cyl power. U nless you’re towing or hauling a fully packed van, you won’t feel underpowered.

The only reason the 4 cyl kinda turns me off is I’m used to the performance of my van. My van is quicker than any modern van on the market, so anything feels slow in comparison.

That and I would potentially add a small lift/ATs down the road, so IDK how the 4 cyl would handle turning bigger tires.

How do you like yours?

How’s the economy?

My car cracks off mid 30s on the highway, low 30s in mixed driving.

Unless I get a lead foot, then it’s around 25mpg......

Kinja'd!!!1

Eh, all my 90s vehicles have gotten decent mileage in reality.

The 92 Caravan just pulled 26 mpg on a 250mi road trip and has been averaging around 24 mpg in mixed driving.

My old Acclaim with the built 3.0/ manual would pull 38 hwy, 32-34 in mixed driving. Could have done way better if it would have gotten tuned, anything over 1/2 throttle would peg my A/F gauge rich.

My 94 with the 3.8, ATs/lift/basket/etc does 22 hwy, 18.5-21 in mixed driving. Without my additions I saw as high as 27 mpg hwy, 25 mpg mixed.

Our 1990 Century 3.3L would pull 38.5 hwy, 34 mpg mixed.

I usually have a pretty heavy foot on top of it, so I think the average person could probably do better.

I am kinda hard pressed to step away from what I have, I love them all too much.

I’m too attached to mine, so it won’t go anywhere. Everyone loves the car, so that stays too. The 92 is the only one we’re not super attached to yet, but it’s gaining it’s place everyday.

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness > random001
03/19/2019 at 10:22

Kinja'd!!!1

I think it’s a combo of things.

Weight.

Lack of low end torque.

Gearing for acceleration.

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness > Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
03/19/2019 at 12:10

Kinja'd!!!0

My van is the heaviest vehicle I own, weighing in at just over 3300lbs.

All my vehicles have more torque than HP with wide torque bands, meaning they are happy to chug along just over idle.

They are also only spinning around 2k rpms at 75 mph ( exception to the 92 which turns just over 3k ).

Combine all those factors and great real world mileage is your result.

Kinja'd!!!1

You bring up a good point about lifting and adding tires. It obviously could benefit with more power. A snorkel on a TC would look awesome!

I love mine, my only regret is not being patient enough to find one with rear seats. The entire back is bar ren, so you hear everything back there. It sure helped when I moved, I fit an entire bedroom back there! I have plans on soundproofing, insulating, and installing a futon back there to camp with. Economy is ok. I have never calculated it myself, but the one on the dash reads an average of 24.4. I like to think that isn’t bad for a tall block shaped vehicle. Since the 2.5 is naturally aspirated , you save on having to pump premium in compared to the ecoboost.

Kinja'd!!!0

I really feel like it should do better than 24.4?!?!

That’s what I average from my 92 Caravan with a 3.0 V6 and a 3 speed auto!

As your tastes are domestic, how about a ‘07 or so Uplander. I have had mine 11 years and it’s been very good. Rides well, handles well, and the 3.9 engine with a 4 speed is well matched, Also a ton of room.

Kinja'd!!! i86hotdogs > Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness
03/20/2019 at 06:32

Kinja'd!!!1

Perhaps it will do better with their newer 8 speed auto. Mine has the 6 speed, which was a huge upgrade to the groan-worthy 4 speed in the first gen TC, but can stay stuck in 2nd gear a while pulling onto a ramp.

Kinja'd!!! Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness > i86hotdogs
03/20/2019 at 07:08

Kinja'd!!!0

I didn’t have that issue with any of the 2.5L one we drove? Maybe just an EB thing?

I doubt the 8-speed will do any better as it’s likely going to be a couple more gears thrown in the middle to help with performance, like most manufacturers. Having extra gears doesn’t matter much when you’re still turning 3k+ on the highway.

I don’ t do too much highway driving. My daily commute is side streets averaging 25-35mph. We usual ly take the 200 on long distances because we get 38mpg consistently from her
